Mon Dec 08 13:51:25 UTC 2025: News Article: RSF Claims Control of Key Sudanese Oilfield, Heglig
Heglig, Sudan – The Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have announced they have seized control of the strategic Heglig oilfield in Sudan’s South Kordofan province, a claim confirmed by the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) who stated they withdrew from the area. Heglig is Sudan’s largest oilfield and a crucial processing facility for South Sudan’s oil exports.
The RSF’s advance on Heglig is part of a broader push eastward and southward from the Darfur region, which the paramilitary group secured last month after two-and-a-half-year conflict with SAF. Youssef Alian, head of an RSF-affiliated “civil administration” asserted his coordination in the takeover, stating a trained force was prepared to secure the field.
The SAF confirmed their withdrawal, citing the need to protect the oil facilities and prevent damage. An engineer on site confirmed the evacuation of army personnel and workers to South Sudan, resulting in the shutdown of the processing plant used for South Sudanese oil.
The RSF hailed the takeover as a “pivotal point in the liberation of the entire homeland.” This move grants the RSF control over a significant revenue source and a potential route toward Khartoum, the Sudanese capital.
The conflict between the Sudanese army and the RSF, ongoing since April 2023, has resulted in a dire humanitarian crisis. The United Nations estimates that the war has killed tens of thousands and displaced over 12 million people, leaving 30 million in need of humanitarian assistance.
