Mon Dec 08 06:00:00 UTC 2025: Headline: Supreme Court Declines Urgent Hearing on IndiGo Crisis as Thousands Remain Stranded

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday refused to fast-track a hearing regarding the ongoing crisis at IndiGo, which has seen over 4,500 flights cancelled in the past week and has left thousands of passengers stranded across the country. Chief Justice of India Surya Kant stated the court would await the government’s response before intervening, emphasizing, “We can’t run an airline.”

The plea for an urgent hearing was made by a lawyer highlighting the immense suffering of passengers due to cancellations without prior notice. While acknowledging the seriousness of the situation and the plight of stranded travelers, the CJI noted that the government has already acknowledged the crisis and seems to be taking action.

Meanwhile, the Delhi High Court has agreed to hear a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) on Wednesday concerning alleged rule violations by IndiGo, including arbitrary cancellations, overbooking, passenger rights violations, discriminatory practices, and failures to comply with DGCA regulations. The PIL seeks an independent judicial investigation and demands the Centre provide immediate basic facilities to stranded passengers.

IndiGo’s operational disruptions continued on Monday, with a further 450 flights cancelled. The Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has already issued show cause notices to IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers and the company’s accountable manager, demanding an explanation for the extensive disruptions. IndiGo responded to the Centre with a letter on Monday.
