NLSIU to Integrate Indian Languages into Curriculum

Bengaluru, December 8, 2025 – The National Law School of India University (NLSIU) announced today that it will be incorporating Indian language and literature components into its curriculum, starting with Kannada and Hindi. This marks a significant first for the institution.

Beginning in 2026, the program will offer courses at beginner and intermediate levels, with advanced electives planned for the future. The curriculum emphasizes attentive listening, fluent speaking, critical reading, and persuasive writing.

The mandatory courses for BA (Hons) students and optional to other courses, reflect the growing need for graduates entering legal, governmental, and public-facing roles to understand and communicate effectively in Indian languages.

“The Programme in Indian Languages and Literatures is built around this goal. It aims to develop a multilingual imagination in students, encouraging them to think, speak and write across languages, and to engage with the cultural contexts that shape them,” stated Atreyee Majumder, associate professor, Social Science and BA (Hons) co-chair.

Level 1 will focus on introducing the script, basic conversation, translation, and document interpretation. Level 2 delves deeper into language and culture, focusing on reading periodicals, summarizing arguments, and developing formal writing skills.

NLSIU also plans to launch language certificate courses for the general public, blending communication skills with cultural appreciation.
