Sun Dec 07 20:30:00 UTC 2025: Vikings’ Offensive Woes Put Head Coach O’Connell Under Scrutiny

EAGAN, Minn. – The Minnesota Vikings’ once-vaunted offense has sputtered to a halt, leading to questions about the performance of young quarterbacks J.J. McCarthy and Max Brosmer, and increased scrutiny of Head Coach Kevin O’Connell. Once celebrated for his offensive prowess, O’Connell is now facing his biggest challenge as the Vikings (4-8) have gone scoreless in their last six quarters.

The Vikings suffered their first shutout since 2007, a 26-0 loss to the Seattle Seahawks, marking their worst offensive performance in decades. While rookie quarterbacks have struggled, ranking near the bottom of the league in QBR, O’Connell has acknowledged his role in the offensive struggles. He implied he may have been too ambitious in implementing his scheme, despite attempts to simplify play selection and lean more on the run game.

O’Connell’s offensive philosophy, which emphasizes explosive passing plays, was successful in previous seasons with veteran quarterbacks. However, the team’s inability to execute these plays with their current quarterbacks has exposed weaknesses in the offense. While the Vikings spent nearly $350 million to the 2025 roster in anticipation of supporting first-year starter McCarthy through a playoff run, the struggles cannot be solely attributed to the quarterbacks’ inexperience. Even offensive coordinator Wes Phillips pointed out the team’s coaching staff must put their players in the best postion to have success.

O’Connell admitted that a failed fourth-down play against Seattle was a poor call and stated his focus moving forward is on quarterback decision-making and making sure his players have the best path to success. The Vikings will need to determine the best course of action for McCarthy’s development and assess whether a shift in offensive strategy is necessary during the offseason.
