Remote Polling Station in Periyar Tiger Reserve Gears Up for Local Elections with Minimal Voters
Idukki, December 7, 2025 – Tucked deep within the Periyar Tiger Reserve (PTR), the polling station at Pachakkanam is preparing to serve a remarkably small electorate in the upcoming Kerala local body elections. Located in an Anganwadi building and part of the newly formed Mullaperiyar ward of the Kumily grama panchayat, the station boasts a mere 29 registered voters, according to Kumily grama panchayat secretary R. Ashok. The breakdown includes 16 men and 13 women.
Despite its tiny voter base, officials are committed to ensuring a smooth polling process. However, a notable trend of declining voter numbers has been observed in Pachakkanam since 2016, when the station had 39 registered voters during the Assembly elections. The reasons for this decline remain unclear.
The elections are taking place across Kerala and will determine local governance for the next term.
