Sun Dec 07 07:30:00 UTC 2025: ## Brightburn 2 Officially Grounded: Rights Issues Stall Superhero Horror Sequel

Los Angeles, CA – December 4, 2025 – Fans hoping for a follow-up to the 2019 superhero horror hit Brightburn have received disappointing news. Despite earlier discussions and expressed interest from director David Yarovesky in expanding the universe, producer James Gunn has confirmed that Brightburn 2 is not currently in development.

The original film, starring Elizabeth Banks and Jackson A. Dunn, offered a dark twist on the Superman mythos, exploring what might happen if a child with extraordinary powers chose a villainous path. Its unique premise and strong performance earned it a dedicated following and commercial success.

However, Gunn revealed on Threads in March 2024 that complicated rights issues are the major stumbling block. “I mean we talked about it early on. But the rights are all f**ked up (I only own half) so it’s unlikely that it will ever happen,” he stated.

While this effectively shuts down current plans, hope remains for the future. Gunn’s statement leaves open the possibility of a revival if the rights issues can be resolved. The film’s initial success and continued fan interest could incentivize stakeholders to overcome these hurdles and bring Brandon Breyer back to the big screen.

Brightburn, made on a budget of $6 million, grossed $33.2 million worldwide. Whether this commercial success, coupled with the film’s unique approach, will be enough to overcome the rights complications remains to be seen. For now, fans will have to remain in the dark regarding the further adventures of the sinister superpowered being.
