Sun Dec 07 07:00:53 UTC 2025: Germany’s Support for Israel Remains Strong Despite Brief Arms Export Suspension
Berlin – German Chancellor Friedrich Merz is in Israel for his first official visit since assuming office, underscoring the close relationship between the two nations. The visit follows Germany’s recent decision to lift a three-month suspension on arms exports to Israel, a move that has drawn both praise and criticism.
Germany is a key ally of Israel, serving as its second-largest arms supplier after the United States and its fifth-largest export partner. In 2023 alone, Germany authorized 308 military export licenses to Israel, worth 326.5 million euros. This strong military support includes naval equipment used in attacks on Gaza and enforcement of a naval blockade, as well as smaller munitions and missile technology.
The recent suspension of arms exports, announced in August, was prompted by concerns over the rising civilian death toll in Gaza. However, the decision was reversed in November, with German officials citing a “stabilized” situation in Gaza following a ceasefire. Critics argue that the ceasefire has been repeatedly violated, with ongoing Israeli attacks resulting in numerous Palestinian casualties.
Beyond military cooperation, Germany and Israel maintain strong economic ties. In 2023, Israel exported $2.64 billion worth of goods to Germany, primarily in advanced technologies and electronics, while Germany exported $5.5 billion worth of goods to Israel, including machinery, electronics, cars, and pharmaceuticals. Germany actively invests in Israeli technology through various collaborations and partnerships.
Germany’s unwavering support for Israel is rooted in its historical responsibility stemming from the Holocaust. This “special relationship” often translates into political backing, military assistance, and a cautious approach to UN resolutions concerning Israel and Palestine.
Chancellor Merz is scheduled to meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to discuss bilateral relations, the Gaza ceasefire, and other pressing issues. The visit highlights the ongoing importance of the German-Israeli partnership, despite recent tensions and concerns over the conflict in Gaza.
