Sun Dec 07 09:00:00 UTC 2025: Weatherald’s Hendrix Homage Sparks Electrifying Day for Australia at the Gabba
Brisbane, Australia – Jake Weatherald, sporting gloves inscribed with “JH” in honor of Jimi Hendrix, set the Gabba alight on Friday with a blistering 72 off 78 balls, leading Australia to a strong, though potentially squandered, position in the ongoing Ashes Test.
Weatherald, who chose the left glove to honour the left-handed guitarist, combined with fellow opener Travis Head for a rapid-fire start that saw Australia scoring at over a run a ball, peppering the English attack.
While Weatherald’s innings was the highlight, the day wasn’t without its twists. Following his great start Green’s aggressive intent caused a mid-innings stumble when the top order collapsed. The English bowlers, struggled in the harsh conditions, with only occasional spells of quality breaking through.
Despite England’s struggles, Australia failed to fully capitalize. A late order fight from Carey ensured they ended the day ahead, they failed to assert the dominance they should have at the start of the day.
The Test remains finely balanced, with England needing to quickly grab the remaining Australian wickets on Saturday to have a chance of pulling back the test. Whether the tourists can withstand the onslaught from Mitchell Starc is another matter.
