Sun Dec 07 09:10:00 UTC 2025: Miami Peace Talks Conclude with “Difficult Issues” Remaining, While Kremlin Praises New US Security Strategy

MIAMI, FL – Talks aimed at brokering a peace deal between Ukraine and Russia concluded in Miami this weekend with limited progress reported, according to Ukrainian officials. The negotiations, involving US special envoy Steve Witkoff, Jared Kushner, and Ukrainian representatives Rustem Umerov and Andriy Hnatov, focused on resolving key obstacles such as security guarantees for Ukraine and territorial disputes.

Ukrainian Ambassador to the US, Olga Stefanishyna, acknowledged the challenges, stating, “Difficult issues remain, but both sides continue working to shape realistic and acceptable solutions.” She emphasized that territory and security guarantees are the primary sticking points.

The Miami meeting, preceded by a US delegation visit to Moscow, followed President Trump’s statement that the US believed Putin “would like to see the war ended”.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky addressed the talks in a social media post, describing a “long” and “constructive” phone conversation with the US delegation, discussing “key points that could ensure an end to the bloodshed.” He cited concerns regarding Russia’s historical tendency to disregard promises, stating he and the delegation agreed to next steps to ensure the security of Ukraine.

Zelensky is scheduled to meet with leaders from France, Britain, and Germany in London on Monday to discuss the Miami negotiations and the broader situation.

In a separate development, the Kremlin has welcomed the Trump administration’s new national security strategy. Russian Spokesman Dmitry Peskov told TASS, “We considered this a positive step,” saying the strategy dropped the language describing Russia as a threat.

The US strategy describes European nations perceiving Russia as “an existential threat,” but positions the US as a key player in diplomacy to restore stability in Europe and establish strategic stability with Russia. This contrasts sharply with a 2022 national security strategy under the Biden administration, which labeled Russia an “immediate threat” to the international order.

The updated US strategy also reiterates its commitment to re-evaluating NATO’s expansion.
