Sun Dec 07 07:00:00 UTC 2025: England Battles Back in Ashes Test, Stokes and Jacks Lead Resistance

Brisbane, Australia – England showed resilience on day four of the second Ashes Test, batting through the first session without losing a wicket and taking a slender lead against Australia. After a poor performance on Saturday evening, England started the day at 134-6, trailing by 43 runs.

Captain Ben Stokes (36 off 112 balls) and Will Jacks (25 off 66 balls) formed an unbroken 65-run partnership, displaying a patient and determined approach. Their partnership, which lasted 26.3 overs, was England’s longest of the series so far. England reached 193-6, taking a 16-run lead.

Former England captain Michael Vaughan praised the approach on X. Former Australia wicketkeeper Brad Haddin highlighted the danger of Ben Stokes getting comfortable at the wicket and suggested Australia needed to disrupt him.

Former bowler Steven Finn said England coach Brendon McCullum would be pleased by the display of adaptability.

Australia, after being repelled by England’s seamers, turned to part-time bowlers before lunch. They will have a second new pink ball available in the second session. The improved batting performance by England has frustrated the Australian bowlers.
