Chelsea’s Old Habits Resurface in Frustrating Loss to Leeds, Maresca Laments Defensive Errors
LEEDS, UK – Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca expressed his disappointment after witnessing his team’s 3-1 defeat against Leeds United, a match marred by the return of worrying defensive errors reminiscent of earlier struggles in the season. The loss, which broke a four-game unbeaten streak, saw Chelsea struggle with Leeds’ intensity, display carelessness in possession, and ultimately gift their opponents key opportunities.
The most glaring example came when Tosin Adarabioyo’s heavy touch in the penalty area led to Leeds’ third goal, highlighting a lack of composure that has plagued Chelsea at times this season. Enzo Fernandez’s misplaced pass which lead to another goal, further contributing to Chelsea’s woes.
“We looked unprepared for the physicality and ferocity of the fixture,” Maresca conceded. He also noted that several players lacked experience in such an intense environment, as well as the absence of key players like James and Caicedo.
While fatigue may have played a role after facing Barcelona and Arsenal in quick succession, the game revealed underlying issues that have resurfaced despite recent improvements. Chelsea has been prone to losing the ball in their own defensive third, ranking as the fourth-worst team in the Premier League in this category.
Maresca is determined to address these recurring problems, with a focus on developing a settled centre-back partnership and instilling greater composure under pressure.
