Smith publicly called on Kiffin to deliver results for the Tigers. Adding to the challenge, Lamar Brown, the nation’s top-ranked football prospect in the 2026 ESPN 300 and a crucial LSU commit, is holding off on signing during this week’s early signing period.
Sources confirmed to ESPN that Brown, a 6-foot-5, 285-pound defensive tackle from Erwinville, Louisiana, intends to wait for Kiffin to finalize his coaching staff before officially joining the Tigers. This decision casts a shadow of uncertainty over LSU’s prized recruit, despite Brown’s longstanding verbal commitment since July 10.
Brown’s decision is influenced by his close relationships with current LSU defensive coordinator Blake Baker and interim coach Frank Wilson, whose positions are now uncertain under the new regime. Kiffin stated Wilson would remain as interim through the bowl season. Brown attends High school on the LSU campus, which further adds to his uncertainty.
Brown’s commitment has been the cornerstone of the Tigers’ 2026 recruiting class. Securing Brown would be a major victory for Kiffin, marking the program’s first No. 1 prospect since Leonard Fournette in 2014.
Despite the uncertainty surrounding Brown, Kiffin has secured his first commitments since arriving in Baton Rouge. Former Ole Miss tight end pledge JC Anderson (No. 165 overall) flipped to LSU, becoming the first commit of the Kiffin era. Three-star center Ryan Miret, also formerly committed to Ole Miss, and four-star wide receiver Brayden Allen, recently decommitted from Oklahoma, followed suit. However, LSU also saw a decommitment from four-star wide receiver Kenny Darby on Tuesday.
