Shah Rukh Khan’s Call: KKR Release Star Andre Russell, Appoint Him Power Coach

Kolkata, India – In a surprising turn of events, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) CEO Venky Mysore revealed that the decision to release star all-rounder Andre Russell from the team roster was ultimately made by team owner Shah Rukh Khan. Russell, a KKR mainstay for years, announced his IPL retirement on November 30th, but will be joining the franchise as a Power Coach for the 2026 season.

Mysore disclosed that releasing Russell, despite his Rs 12 crore contract, freed up a significant Rs 18 crore in the team’s auction purse for the upcoming season. The inflated amount was due to Russell being listed as “Player 1” in the retention list last year. “That was the trigger,” Mysore explained, highlighting the financial flexibility the move provided for the mini-auctions.

Russell, who played 140 IPL games, amassing 2,651 runs and 123 wickets, has been an integral part of KKR, winning titles in 2014 and 2024. His departure from the playing field was an emotional one, as Mysore noted, with Russell expressing his deep connection to the “Purple and Gold” franchise after the decision was made.

Adding another layer of intrigue, Mysore confessed that Russell’s appointment as “Power Coach,” a role without prior coaching experience, was “a spur-of-the-moment thought.” The idea, he said, resonated with Russell due to his reputation for explosive batting, impactful bowling, and athletic fielding. The decision was made when Mysore shared with SRK that Russell was considering retiring.
