Puri, Odisha – India has solidified its position as a leading force in renewable energy, with a dramatic surge in solar power generation, according to Union Minister of New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi. Speaking at the Global Energy Leaders’ Summit in Puri on Saturday, Minister Joshi revealed that India added 31.25 gigawatts of renewable energy this financial year alone, including a remarkable 24.28 gigawatts of solar power.

“It took nearly 70 years to reach one Terawatt of power from renewable sources, but we achieved the second Terawatt in just two years,” Joshi stated, highlighting the accelerating pace of India’s green energy transition. The country’s solar capacity has grown from 2.8 GW to around 130 GW in the last 11 years, marking an increase of over 4,500%.

While India holds the world’s fifth-largest coal reserves, Minister Joshi emphasized the importance of a balanced approach to energy production.

Odisha is rapidly becoming a major renewable energy hub, boasting 3.1 GW of renewable energy capacity and a 34% clean share in its power mix.
