Winter Weather Advisory Issued for Northern Central NC; Person County Seeing Light Snowfall

RALEIGH, N.C. – A wintry mix impacted areas of Central North Carolina north of I-85 early Friday morning, prompting a Winter Weather Advisory for northern counties until noon. Light accumulations were reported on elevated surfaces, primarily in areas closer to the Virginia border.

The storm system is moving more quickly than expected, reducing the overall threat of wintry weather. While a mix of sleet and snow remains possible north of I-85 for a few more hours, with minor accumulations possible on elevated and grassy surfaces, the Triangle area is mainly experiencing cold rain with some sleet mixed in.

Person County appears to be the area most affected, with light snow dusting the ground and other surfaces early Friday. The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) pre-treated roads in Person County, focusing on bridges and elevated surfaces, in anticipation of the wintry weather.

“Anything that’s elevated, and all bridges getting brined today,” said Kim Deaner from NCDOT. “Person County seems to be the hotspot.”

No travel impacts are anticipated south of I-85, but showers will continue south and east along the I-95 corridor into the afternoon hours. Motorists are advised to remain alert during their morning commute, especially in areas north of I-85.
