Fri Dec 05 19:32:21 UTC 2025: ## Trump Awarded Inaugural FIFA Peace Prize Amid Controversy
Washington, D.C. – December 6, 2025 – U.S. President Donald Trump received the newly created FIFA Peace Prize at the 2026 World Cup draw on Friday, December 5th, adding a controversial element to the event. FIFA President Gianni Infantino presented the award, citing Trump’s efforts to broker a ceasefire in Gaza and promote peace and unity worldwide.
Infantino lauded Trump as “a leader that cares about the people,” presenting him with a medal and a trophy depicting hands holding up the world. Trump, in turn, praised the leaders of Canada and Mexico, the other host nations for the 2026 World Cup, for their “outstanding” coordination.
The award has sparked debate, with critics questioning the decision given Trump’s administration’s recent actions, including lethal strikes in the Caribbean and increasingly harsh rhetoric on immigration.
The FIFA president also attended the renaming of the Donald J. Trump Institute of Peace on Thursday, where Trump facilitated a deal between the Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda to address the conflict in eastern Congo.
The Nobel Peace Prize, which Trump has openly pursued, was awarded to Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado, who dedicated part of her prize to Trump for his support.
FIFA describes the Peace Prize as recognizing individuals who have taken extraordinary actions for peace and uniting people globally, a departure from the organization’s traditional focus on sports.
