Doha, Qatar – Amid ongoing talks between Ukrainian and US officials aimed at ending the Russia-Ukraine war, European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas has affirmed the United States remains Europe’s “biggest ally.” Speaking at the Doha Forum on Saturday, Kallas addressed recent criticisms leveled at Europe in a US National Security Strategy document, stating that while some points are valid, the EU and US must maintain a strong alliance.

The US document, which questioned Europe’s “self-confidence” and reliability as an ally, echoes previous sentiments expressed by the Trump administration regarding NATO contributions. Concerns have arisen regarding US proposals to resolve the conflict, with suggestions that Ukraine cede territory to Russia in exchange for security assurances.

US officials are currently engaged in a third day of discussions with Ukrainian counterparts to address these concerns, following negotiations in Moscow that revealed Russia’s continued insistence on territorial claims. Washington emphasized that “real progress” hinges on Russia’s commitment to long-term peace and de-escalation.

Kallas cautioned against pressuring Ukraine to concede to Russian demands, warning that rewarding aggression would set a dangerous precedent. She also urged Europe to recognize its own strength, particularly in its approach to Russia. The EU foreign policy chief said Europe should have “more self-confidence”.
