Army and Navy Set to Clash in Baltimore: A Battle of Pride and Service
Baltimore, MD – M&T Bank Stadium is set to host the annual Army-Navy game this weekend, a time-honored tradition that transcends typical college football rivalries. More than just a game, it’s a showcase of dedication, discipline, and service to the nation.
“It’s a battle of culture, and it’s a battle of pride,” said Navy senior co-captain Landon Robinson. “No matter how good each team is, no matter the record that you’ve had throughout the season, it’s a different season when you go into the Army-Navy game.”
Army Head Coach Jeff Monken emphasized the significance of the game: “They represent the men and women in our armed forces who… train, prepare to stand in the gap between freedom and those who want to take it from us. That’s why it’s America’s game. There’s no other game like it.”
Unlike most college football programs, Army and Navy eschew the transfer portal and Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) deals. Players commit to four years at their respective academies followed by service to their country.
“With a degree from the Naval Academy, all that stuff comes on the back end,” noted Navy Head Coach Brian Newberry. “It takes some foresight for kids to see that and families to see that. But they look at them as a special place, world-class education, one of the best leadership schools in the world, opportunity to serve your country.”
This unique environment allows for significant personal and athletic development. Navy quarterback Blake Horvath, a Heisman Trophy candidate, is a prime example. He has thrown for 1,390 yards and nine touchdowns with five interceptions and rushed for 1,040 yards with 14 touchdowns this season.
“As a freshman, I was like, ‘I’m terrible at football.’ I really doubted myself and had imposter syndrome in a little bit and didn’t think I belonged here. Didn’t think I was good enough, Horvath said.”
Beyond bragging rights, the winner of the game will take home the coveted Commander-in-Chief’s Trophy. Navy currently holds the trophy and will be fighting to retain it for another year.
