Wake County School Board Elects New Leadership, Welcomes New Member Amid Procedural Concerns

RALEIGH, N.C. – The Wake County School Board has undergone a significant shift in leadership, appointing Tyler Swanson as its new chairman and Sam Hershey as vice chairman during a meeting this week. Swanson, who represents Cary, replaces Chris Hegarty as chairman, while Hershey, representing part of Raleigh, succeeds Swanson as vice chairman. Both Hegarty and Swanson had served the maximum two-year term in their previous roles.

The appointments were approved by a 6-2 vote, with board members Cheryl Caulfield and Wing Ng abstaining. Their abstentions stemmed from objections to the process by which the board selected its newest member, Jennifer Job, the previous week.

Job was selected to represent District 8, filling the vacancy left by the resignation of longtime member Lindsay Mahaffey in August. District 8 encompasses Apex and parts of Holly Springs, a politically diverse and rapidly growing area often impacted by student reassignment and overcrowding issues. Job, a Wake County Democratic Party official and principal at BreakGlass Strategies, a political communications firm, was chosen from a pool of 17 applicants. She previously worked as an English teacher in Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools.

Caulfield and Ng raised concerns about the lack of discussion before the initial vote on Job’s appointment. However, outgoing Chairman Hegarty defended the procedure, stating that it is common practice to hold initial votes before engaging in extensive discussion to gauge board member preferences.

Jennifer Job was officially sworn in to her position at the same meeting and will serve until December 2028, with the next election for the seat scheduled for November 2028.
