Fri Dec 05 04:00:31 UTC 2025: ## Federal Grand Jury Rejects Second Attempt to Prosecute NY AG James, Who Decries “Weaponization” of Justice System
New York, NY – A federal grand jury has rejected the Department of Justice’s second attempt to indict New York Attorney General Letitia James, a prominent critic of former President Donald Trump, on criminal charges. The move comes after a previous indictment was dismissed by a judge in November.
James, a Democrat, has repeatedly accused the Trump administration of targeting her in retaliation for her office’s civil fraud case against Trump and his family business. That case resulted in a judge ordering Trump to pay a $450 million penalty after finding he fraudulently overstated his net worth.
Following the grand jury’s decision, James reiterated her claims that the allegations against her were “baseless” and condemned what she called the “unchecked weaponization of our justice system.” Her lawyer, Abbe Lowell, stated that any further attempt to pursue the case would be “a shocking assault on the rule of law.”
The initial indictment against James was dismissed by US District Judge Cameron McGowan Currie, who cited the unlawful appointment of the federal prosecutor, Lindsey Halligan, who secured the indictment.
Despite the grand jury’s refusal to re-indict, Reuters is reporting that federal prosecutors are reportedly planning to seek a new indictment against James, citing unnamed sources familiar with the matter.
James is one of several high-profile critics of Trump who have faced federal criminal charges in recent months, including former FBI Director James Comey and former National Security Advisor John Bolton. A case against Comey was also dismissed by Judge Currie, citing the same issue with Halligan’s appointment. Bolton has pleaded not guilty to charges of sharing sensitive government information.
