Indian Creative Industries Aim for Global Impact, Breaking Free from Outsourcing

Bengaluru, India – December 5, 2025 – India’s creative industries, long recognized for providing support and outsourcing services to major international studios, are now striving to create and own globally resonating intellectual property. Despite successes like the film “RRR” and Aamir Khan’s films in China, the country lacks a consistent stream of globally impactful cultural exports.

Several initiatives are underway to address this gap. In Bengaluru, Megha Gupta’s Wala Interactive is developing “Spook-A-Boo,” a PC and console game, marking a shift from hypercasual mobile game development. Gupta aims to tap into the larger global market, as PC and console gaming remain niche in India.

The Indian government is also investing heavily in the sector. The National Centre of Excellence for AVGC-XR (Animation, Visual Effects, Gaming, Comics, and Extended Reality) aims to foster domestic IP creation rooted in India’s rich heritage. A $1 billion fund has been established to support the creative economy.

Creators like Abeer Kapoor, founder of Civic Games Lab, emphasize the importance of a thriving ecosystem with funding and support. Kapoor points to the potential of existing Indian IPs, such as R.K. Narayan’s “Malgudi Days,” urging for their continued recreation and development.

In Goa, filmmaker Anand Gandhi and Zain Memon’s Department of Lore are developing “Maya,” a “transmedia” franchise funded via Kickstarter, with the goal of creating a cultural monument representing the Global South. Memon believes that access to both Western and Eastern cultural capital, combined with the flattening of the playing field in the post-Internet distribution world, makes this the right time for Indian creative endeavors to succeed.

Gandhi emphasizes the power of storytelling and the need for dialogue, suggesting that India is ready to contribute its unique perspective to the global cultural landscape.
