Putin Defends India’s Russian Oil Purchases Amid US Pressure During Warm Delhi Visit
New Delhi, India – Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived in New Delhi on Thursday, receiving a warm welcome from Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, even as the US increases pressure on India for its continued purchase of Russian oil. The visit underscores India’s complex balancing act between its longstanding relationship with Russia and its growing ties with the United States.
Upon arrival, Modi embraced Putin in a rare personal gesture, signaling the strength of their bond despite increasing international scrutiny of Russia’s actions in Ukraine.
In an interview prior to the visit, Putin questioned the logic behind US criticism of India’s oil imports, pointing out that the US continues to purchase Russian nuclear fuel. He argued that if the US is allowed to buy Russian fuel, India should have the same right.
Al Jazeera’s Neha Poonia reports that the warm reception sends a message that Putin is not a pariah and that India is willing to maintain ties with Russia despite Western pressure.
India’s oil imports from Russia have surged since 2022, now accounting for nearly 36% of its total crude purchases. While Indian refiners have benefited from discounted Russian crude, the US has imposed tariffs on Indian goods in retaliation.
On Friday, Putin and Modi are expected to hold summit talks to discuss and announce agreements related to defence cooperation, shipping, healthcare and labour mobility.
