Banerjee Claims SIR Prevented President’s Rule in West Bengal, Rejects NRC

Kolkata, December 5, 2025 – West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee asserted yesterday that the state government’s decision to proceed with the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists prevented the imposition of President’s rule in the state. Speaking at a public meeting in Murshidabad district on December 4, 2025, Banerjee accused the central government of plotting to undermine the state’s democracy.

Banerjee, whose Trinamool Congress initially opposed SIR, has now reconciled with the revision, urging citizens to participate and submit necessary documents without fear. She firmly reiterated her opposition to the National Register of Citizens (NRC) and vowed to prevent the construction of detention camps in West Bengal.

Ahead of December 6th, the Chief Minister also emphasized the importance of communal harmony, highlighting West Bengal’s tradition of respecting all religions and rejecting communal forces. This comes after the Trinamool Congress suspended MLA Humayun Kabir for announcing plans to lay the foundation stone of Babri Masjid in Murshidabad on December 6th.

Banerjee alluded to “traitors” taking money from the BJP to incite communal tensions and emphasized that “politics of riots” would not be accepted. She invoked the history of Murshidabad, a district that has witnessed communal tensions related to the Waqf (Amendment) Bill earlier this year, calling on people to remember Siraj-ud-Daulah and pluralistic legacy of the district. She also sought to allay fears about the Waqf bill, dispelling rumors about the government’s handling of Waqf properties.
