Brady Niece Achieves Draft Feat Uncle Tom Never Did

OKLAHOMA CITY, OK – Maya Brady, niece of NFL legend Tom Brady, was selected first overall in the Athletes Unlimited Softball League’s (AUSL) expansion and allocation drafts on Monday. The Oklahoma City Spark chose the former UCLA Bruins star shortstop, marking an achievement her famous uncle never attained in his football career.

Brady, the daughter of Maureen Brady and a standout softball player in her own right, comes from a lineage of athletic excellence. During her time at UCLA, Brady earned numerous accolades, including two Pac-12 Player of the Year Awards and three First Team National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-American honors. She concluded her collegiate career as the program’s second-leading home run hitter (71) and RBI leader (246).

“For me, knowing that my family is very successful, I think it puts a lot of good pressure on me,” Brady told The Athletic in 2021. “It’s not pressure like…I’m going to put shame on the Brady family name. It’s just good pressure. I love bearing the last name. I’m just really proud of it.”

Other notable draft picks included former Oklahoma Sooners pitcher Sam Landry (No. 2 to the Cascade) and former Oklahoma State Cowgirls pitcher Kelly Maxwell (No. 1 in the allocation draft to the Cascade). Former Sooner slugger Jocelyn Alo was selected 10th overall in the allocation draft by the Bandits.

The AUSL, founded in 2024, features six teams. The Talons were crowned champions in the 2025 season.
