Winter Storm Slams Midwest and Northeast, Causing Chaos and One Fatality
A powerful winter storm swept across the Midwest and Northeast this week, dumping heavy snow, causing hazardous travel conditions, and leaving one person dead.
The storm delivered the first widespread snowfall of the season to much of the Northeast and New England, while Philadelphia, New York, and Boston saw minimal snow. Interior regions, however, were blanketed with 6 to 12 inches of snow. A foot of snow was reported near Phoenicia, New York. Numerous reports of 6 to 9 inches of snow came in from northeastern Pennsylvania, upstate New York, western Massachusetts, Vermont, and New Hampshire.
The storm’s impact was felt acutely on the roads. In Missouri, a 21-year-old driver was killed when their car went off the road and overturned. Pennsylvania State Police responded to 625 crashes and 720 disabled vehicles, a significant increase from Monday. Vermont State Troopers responded to 50 weather-related crashes. In West Virginia, a tractor-trailer driver had to be rescued after losing control on slick roads.
Air travel was also disrupted. Boston Logan International Airport was under a ground stop due to high winds. Greater Rochester International Airport had to de-ice a plane that was frozen to the tarmac.
While the storm is now exiting the Northeast, frigid temperatures are expected to follow, particularly in the Midwest. Highs will struggle to reach 10 degrees in the Dakotas, with wind chills as low as -25 degrees. Authorities are urging residents to take precautions, including slowing down on slick roads, allowing extra travel time, and preparing for the bitter cold.
