Tue Dec 02 20:20:00 UTC 2025: Chelsea Boss Maresca Slams Inconsistent Refereeing After Arsenal Draw
London, UK – Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has publicly criticized the inconsistency of Premier League officiating following his team’s 1-1 draw against Arsenal on Sunday. The frustration stems from a red card issued to midfielder Moisés Caicedo for a challenge on Mikel Merino, an incident that Maresca feels was judged differently compared to a similar foul earlier in the season.
Maresca didn’t dispute the validity of Caicedo’s red card, admitting it was a foul. However, he questioned why Tottenham’s Rodrigo Bentancur wasn’t similarly punished for a challenge on Chelsea captain Reece James during their previous encounter, a match Chelsea lost 1-0. “The reality is it’s a red card [for Caicedo]. But why do they judge it in a different way?” Maresca stated, highlighting the confusion and frustration felt by his coaching staff.
Adding to the manager’s grievances was a later incident involving Arsenal defender Piero Hincapié. Already on a yellow card, Hincapié appeared to strike Chelsea’s Trevoh Chalobah in the face, leaving the defender with a visible black eye. Maresca expressed disappointment that Hincapié wasn’t shown a second yellow, stating he was told by the referee the blow was accidental.
Despite playing with ten men for a significant portion of the game, Chelsea displayed resilience and secured a hard-fought draw against the league-leading Arsenal. Chalobah’s opening goal was eventually cancelled out by Merino, but Chelsea arguably had more chances and looked capable of securing a victory.
Chelsea captain James echoed Maresca’s pride in the team’s performance, stating: “We knew it was going to be tough, but being honest, it was a game we felt we probably could have won. It was tough to only come away with a point considering how well we did.”
