Meerut, Uttar Pradesh – Booth Level Officer Hospitalized After Alleged Suicide Attempt
Meerut, Uttar Pradesh – December 3, 2025 – A Booth Level Officer (BLO) deployed for the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Meerut is in serious condition after an alleged suicide attempt. Mohit Chaudhary (35), a senior assistant in the Irrigation Department who also served as a BLO-ICD in the Pallavpuram area, was rushed to the hospital late Tuesday night.
Family members claim Mr. Chaudhary was under immense stress due to his dual responsibilities and heavy workload. They allege a tehsil-level supervisor, Ashish Sharma, repeatedly pressured him about the progress of forms, threatening suspension and an FIR. Mr. Chaudhary’s wife, Jyoti, stated that he was working long hours, not eating properly, and had been mentally distressed for days.
Following the incident, union representatives and fellow BLOs protested at the hospital, accusing the supervisor of harassment and demanding action. They claim BLOs are overburdened under the SIR exercise and subjected to undue pressure and threats from officials. The union warned of further agitation if their demands are not met.
Additional City Magistrate Deepak Kathuria, Naib Tehsildar Aadesh Singh, and police personnel arrived at the hospital to maintain peace and assured the family of a thorough inquiry.
District Election Officer and District Magistrate (DM) V.K. Singh stated that Mr. Chaudhary’s condition is now stable. While acknowledging the SIR drive, the DM noted that preliminary findings suggest Mr. Chaudhary had completed over 70% of his assigned work and that other potential factors, such as domestic issues, will be considered in the investigation.
