Tue Dec 02 16:30:00 UTC 2025: ## Trump Team in Moscow for Ukraine Peace Talks Amidst Skepticism

Moscow, Russia – US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, son-in-law of President Donald Trump, are currently meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow to discuss a potential peace plan for Ukraine. The high-stakes meeting comes as both sides express cautious optimism while navigating significant obstacles to a ceasefire.

The Kremlin reiterated its position that any peace agreement must address the “underlying reasons” for the invasion, including halting NATO expansion and securing Russian control over occupied territories. While Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov lauded the Trump administration’s “very effective” mediation efforts, he emphasized that Moscow will only agree to peace if its war goals are achieved.

Putin himself accused European nations of attempting to sabotage US peace efforts by imposing “unacceptable” demands on Russia, suggesting they are “on the side of the war.” He also warned Europe against engaging in a conflict with Russia, stating the Kremlin is “ready” to respond if attacked. In addition, Putin threatened to expand strikes against Ukrainian port facilities and vessels, potentially cutting Ukraine off from the sea.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, currently in Dublin, described the diplomatic situation as “one of the most challenging and yet optimistic moments.” He indicated he may meet with US representatives soon after the Moscow talks. Zelensky urged Ukraine’s allies to pursue a “decent, dignified peace” rather than a mere pause in fighting.

On the ground, Russia claims to have captured Pokrovsk, a key eastern Ukrainian city. Ukraine dismissed this claim as a propaganda tactic aimed at influencing negotiations, though sources on the ground suggest the situation is dire.

The meeting is underway in the Kremlin with no set time limit. The outcome remains uncertain, with significant hurdles remaining in achieving a lasting peace.
