Sun Nov 30 18:35:43 UTC 2025: News Article: Verstappen Closes Gap on Norris in Thrilling Qatar GP, Championship Decided in Abu Dhabi

Doha, Qatar – Max Verstappen of Red Bull Racing secured a crucial victory at the Qatar Grand Prix on Sunday, tightening the Formula One drivers’ championship battle with McLaren’s Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri. Verstappen’s win at the Lusail Circuit brings him within 12 points of championship leader Norris, setting the stage for a nail-biting finale in Abu Dhabi next weekend.

Piastri, who started on pole, finished second, positioning him just 16 points behind Norris in the standings, keeping his championship hopes alive. Carlos Sainz of Williams rounded out the podium, finishing third.

The Qatar Grand Prix saw Verstappen take the lead early, capitalizing on a well-timed pit stop under a safety car, a strategy that McLaren failed to mirror for their drivers. Piastri admitted the team missed a key strategic opportunity, resulting in lost time for both McLaren drivers.

“An incredible race for us,” Verstappen said after his 70th career grand prix victory. “We made the right call to box under that safety car. A strong race for us on a weekend that was tough.”

The championship now heads to Abu Dhabi’s Yas Marina Circuit, where Verstappen famously clinched the title in 2021. While Verstappen acknowledged the possibility of winning the championship, he remained composed, stating, “I don’t really worry about it too much.”

The Abu Dhabi Grand Prix is set to be a showdown between Verstappen and the McLaren duo, with the championship title on the line.
