Mon Dec 01 16:03:00 UTC 2025: US Officials to Meet Putin Amid Intense Diplomatic Efforts to End Ukraine War
Moscow – Amid a flurry of diplomatic activity aimed at resolving the nearly four-year-old war in Ukraine, senior US officials are scheduled to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on Tuesday. The meeting follows US-Ukraine peace talks held in Florida on Sunday and comes as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris to galvanize support for Kyiv.
The US delegation, led by envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, Trump’s son-in-law, will reportedly discuss the latest draft peace agreement with Putin. While a breakthrough remains uncertain, the flurry of diplomatic engagements suggests a renewed push for a negotiated settlement.
The meetings occur against a backdrop of ongoing fighting in eastern Ukraine, with Russia claiming to have seized the settlement of Klynove. A Russian missile strike on Dnipro resulted in at least four deaths and dozens of injuries.
Earlier, Zelenskyy described the US-Ukraine talks as “very constructive” while noting that “tough issues” remained. Macron’s office indicated that the meeting in Paris aimed to discuss the conditions necessary for a “fair and lasting peace.”
However, significant obstacles remain. Putin has repeatedly stated that Russia will only end the war when Ukrainian troops withdraw from the four regions Russia illegally annexed in 2022.
Despite the challenges, the intensive diplomatic activity highlights the international community’s desire to end the conflict and find a path towards lasting peace in the region.
