COIMBATORE, India – December 1, 2025 – Authorities in Coimbatore are investigating a possible link between a recent gang rape and the murder of a local herder. Police are focusing on three men already in custody for the gang rape of a 20-year-old college student, suspecting they may also be responsible for the death of M. Devaraj, 55, whose body was discovered on November 6.

Devaraj, a herder from Kurumbapalayam, had been missing since November 2. His body was found with blunt force injuries near Serayampalayam. Investigators discovered a log believed to be the murder weapon at the scene.

The three suspects, T. Karuppasamy alias Satheesh, T. Kaleeswaran, alias Karthik, and M. Guna, alias Thavasi, all from Madurai district, reportedly confessed to assaulting a herder in the Serayampalayam area on November 2 during questioning related to the rape case.

According to police reports, Devaraj’s family reported him missing on November 5 after being unable to reach him since the night of November 2. Devaraj had been tending to his sheep, as well as a large flock belonging to another man, in the Pachapalayam area.

Police state that the accused admitted to an altercation with Devaraj, who allegedly confronted them for drinking in a deserted area.
