Miami, FL – Jeff Bezos and his wife, Lauren Sánchez Bezos, are facing growing public scrutiny for their extravagant lifestyle, a stark contrast to the widespread praise received by Bezos’ ex-wife, Mackenzie Scott, for her philanthropic endeavors.
Since their divorce, Scott has donated billions to various nonprofit organizations. Meanwhile, the Bezos’ have been criticized for what some see as tone-deaf displays of wealth. From jet-setting on Bezos’ $500 million superyacht to attending high-profile events, the couple’s activities have drawn attention.
Their recent $50 million wedding in Italy, although intended to be a “low-key” affair, sparked protests from Venice residents concerned about over-tourism.
Adding to the controversy is the couple’s extensive renovation of their newly acquired Florida estate. Bezos purchased the 12,000-square-foot waterfront property on Miami’s exclusive Indian Creek Island – nicknamed “Billionaire Bunker” – for a reported $90 million in April 2024.
According to images obtained by the Daily Mail, the renovations include a manicured lawn adorned with statues reminiscent of Fernando Botero, a mix of both native and imported trees tended to by a hired tree surgeon, a pickleball court, and a cabana office.
Inside, sources say the couple completely gutted and remodeled most of the residence, including its six bedrooms and nine bathrooms. The upgrades purportedly feature high-end finishes like imported flooring, custom furniture, and state-of-the-art appliances. Even the garage was transformed into a lavish home gym complete with $103,000 heavy-duty doors.
What raises even more eyebrows is that this multi-million dollar mansion isn’t even intended as the couple’s permanent residence. Bezos has purchased two adjacent properties for a combined $147 million, with plans to demolish the existing structures and build an even larger mansion spanning the combined lots. As of November 2025, construction has not yet begun.
Critics question the necessity of such lavish spending, especially in light of pressing social issues and Scott’s commitment to addressing them through impactful philanthropy. It remains to be seen how the Bezos’ will respond to the growing scrutiny and whether they will adjust their public image accordingly.
