Protests Erupt as Netanyahu Seeks Presidential Pardon in Corruption Cases
Tel Aviv, Israel – Public outrage erupted in Israel Sunday night as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu formally requested a presidential pardon from President Isaac Herzog in his ongoing corruption trial. Dozens of protesters gathered outside Herzog’s residence in Tel Aviv, chanting slogans and holding signs condemning the request as a threat to democracy.
Netanyahu, who faces charges of bribery, fraud, and breach of trust in three separate cases, submitted the pardon request without admitting guilt or expressing remorse. The move has been met with strong opposition from lawmakers and activists, who argue that granting a pardon would undermine the rule of law.
“He is asking that his trial will be completely cancelled without taking any responsibility,” said activist Shikma Bressler, echoing the sentiment of many protesters.
Opposition leaders have vehemently criticized the request, with Yair Lapid stating that Netanyahu should not be pardoned without admitting guilt, expressing remorse, and retiring from politics.
Netanyahu’s lawyers argue that he believes the legal proceedings would result in a full acquittal and said in a video statement that the continuation of the trial is tearing the country apart.
President Herzog’s office confirmed receipt of the request and stated that he will consider it responsibly after receiving all relevant opinions.
The controversy is further complicated by the International Criminal Court’s arrest warrants for Netanyahu and former Minister of Defence Yoav Gallant on charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity related to the conflict in Gaza.
