Haryana’s Record-Breaking “HR88B8888” Number Plate to Be Re-Auctioned After Bidder Fails to Pay
Chandigarh, Haryana – The “HR88B8888” number plate, which made headlines last week for fetching a staggering Rs 1.17 crore (approximately $140,000 USD) at auction, will be re-auctioned after the winning bidder, Sudhir Kumar of Romulus Solutions Private Limited, failed to submit the payment by the December 1st deadline.
Kumar, who secured the VIP number plate after two days of intense bidding on the state’s official fancy.parivahan.gov.in portal, claimed a technical glitch prevented him from transferring the funds on Saturday night. He also cited family objections to spending such a large sum on a vanity plate.
“Discussions are currently underway with the family… Elderlies in the family that it is not a wise decision to spend such a large amount on a number plate, while my opinion is in favour of it. We will make a final decision by Monday,” Kumar said.
The Haryana government conducts weekly online auctions for sought-after “VIP” or “fancy” number plates. The “HR88B8888” plate, with a base price of Rs 50,000, attracted a total of 45 applications and fierce bidding. The appeal of the plate lies in its sequence of digits, where the letter “B” is visually similar to the number 8. The number “HR88B8888” is a unique vehicle number or VIP number purchased at a premium through bidding. HR is the state code, indicating the vehicle is registered in Haryana. 88 represents the specific Regional Transport Office (RTO) or district within Haryana where the vehicle is registered. B is used to indicate vehicle series code within the specific RTO. 8888 is the unique, four-digit registration number assigned to the vehicle.
The re-auction date for the coveted number plate has not yet been announced.
