Chennai Extends Pet Licensing Deadline, Offers Free Services

Chennai, India – December 1, 2025 – The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has extended the deadline for mandatory pet licensing across its 15 zones until December 7, 2025. This extension aims to allow more pet owners to comply with the new regulations designed to ensure responsible pet ownership and public health.

To obtain a license, pet owners must have their dogs microchipped and vaccinated against rabies. This can be done at any GCC pet clinic or a private veterinary clinic. An online application, accessible through a portal launched in October, must then be completed with proof of vaccination and microchipping. An annual fee of ₹50 per pet is required. While microchipping is optional for cats, vaccinations are mandatory for both cats and dogs prior to online registration.

The GCC is providing free microchipping and rabies vaccination services at veterinary clinics in Thiru Vi Ka Nagar, Nungambakkam, Kannammapet, Meenambakkam, Pulianthope, and Llyods Colony. These services are available from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily, including Sundays. Pet owners need only provide their name and phone number at the clinic to access these services.

“Microchipping is safe and highly recommended for all companion dogs, regardless of breed or size. The ideal age for microchipping a puppy is eight weeks,” stated Samaran Thamarai, Humane Education Officer at Blue Cross of India.

After the December 7 deadline, GCC authorities will conduct door-to-door inspections. Owners found with unlicensed pets will face a fine of ₹5,000 per pet.

While free vaccination services are available to pet owners in other areas like Tambaram, microchipping and registration are only mandatory and provided for pets within GCC jurisdictions.
