Kraken Aim to Capitalize on Oilers’ Struggles in Pacific Division Showdown
Seattle, WA – The Seattle Kraken have a prime opportunity to gain ground in the Pacific Division as they face off against the struggling Edmonton Oilers in a home-and-away series. Currently ahead of the Oilers by three points with two games in hand, the Kraken (10-10-5) are looking to exploit Edmonton’s recent woes, having lost four of their last five games while allowing a concerning number of goals.
The Kraken have already defeated the Oilers twice at Climate Pledge Arena, including a victory just five weeks ago, giving them confidence heading into Saturday’s matchup. While the Oilers have a history of bouncing back from slow starts, the Kraken must seize this chance to establish themselves as a potential playoff contender.
“We have to have other guys step up. Not only on the ice but off the ice,” said Kraken head coach Lane Lambert after practice Friday. “It gets even more concerning once you move past their third-ranked power play unit and discover they’ve averaged only 2.4 goals per game in even-strength play.”
However, the Kraken’s offense needs a boost after struggling to convert chances in their recent games. The team recently announced that Jaden Schwartz, one of their leading goal-scorers, is out for six weeks with a lower-body injury. The return of winger Kaapo Kakko will offer a boost as he practiced Friday without a no-contact jersey and is expected to play alongside Berkly Catton and Freddy Gaudreau.
To succeed, the Kraken must exploit the Oilers’ defensive vulnerabilities. Edmonton ranks near the bottom of the league in goals allowed per game (3.72) and save percentage (.868). While Stuart Skinner has shouldered most of the goaltending duties, his numbers have been underwhelming, and backup Calvin Pickard has fared even worse.
The Kraken must also neutralize the Oilers’ offensive threats, including Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl, and Evan Bouchard. While the Oilers’ offense may not be as deep as in previous years, their top players are still capable of taking over games.
Ultimately, the Kraken’s success hinges on their ability to capitalize on scoring opportunities and maintain their defensive structure. By taking advantage of the Oilers’ struggles and playing to their strengths, the Kraken can solidify their position in the Pacific Division and make a statement as a team to watch this season.
