From Doctor to Terror Suspect: The Shocking Transformation of Shaheen Saeed

New Delhi: A respected doctor from Lucknow, with a seemingly ordinary life, is now at the center of a terror investigation following the October 11th blast near Delhi’s Red Fort. Shaheen Saeed, 46, is accused of being a key player in the deadly attack that claimed the lives of 15 people.

Saeed’s journey from medicine to alleged terrorism is a complex one marked by personal turmoil and a fateful marriage. After two failed marriages, Saeed married Muzammil Shakeel, a Kashmiri doctor, in September 2023. Investigators believe this union introduced Saeed to extremist ideologies.

Raised in a respected family, Saeed was a bright student who specialized in pharmacology. Her first marriage to Dr. Zafar Hayat, an ophthalmologist, lasted nearly a decade but ended in divorce. Hayat described her as a “loving and caring person” and expressed disbelief at the allegations.

Following her divorce, Saeed grew isolated, eventually remarrying briefly before finding love with Shakeel, who exposed her to extremist groups. She was allegedly recruited by Jamaat ul-Mominaat, the women’s wing of Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM), and tasked with forming a team of “terror doctors” to facilitate funding and communication across Jammu and Kashmir, Delhi-NCR, and Haryana.

Saeed’s family has expressed shock and disbelief at the accusations. She, along with Muzammil Shakeel and Adeel Ahmed Rather, has been arrested in connection with the Red Fort blast, where a suicide bomber detonated a car bomb. The investigation is ongoing, seeking to understand the full extent of her involvement and the network she allegedly cultivated.
