Boston, MA – Any Lucia Lopez Belloza, a 19-year-old business student at Babson College, was deported to Honduras last week after being detained at Boston Logan International Airport. Lopez Belloza, who came to the U.S. in 2014, was attempting to fly to Texas to surprise her family for Thanksgiving when she was taken into federal custody.
According to her attorney, Todd Pomerleau, Lopez Belloza was told there was a problem with her ticket and then detained without explanation. She was subsequently flown to Texas and then deported to Honduras, a country she hasn’t lived in since childhood.
A Department of Homeland Security spokesperson stated that Lopez Belloza was arrested as an “illegal alien” and had been ordered to be removed from the country in 2015. Pomerleau criticized the tactics used to detain his client, calling it an “unconstitutional bag job” and describing Lopez Belloza as a “Dreamer living a draconian nightmare.”
Court documents show that a federal judge had previously ordered the government not to remove Lopez Belloza from the U.S. or transfer her outside of Massachusetts. Pomerleau believes her constitutional rights were violated.
Lopez Belloza expressed her heartbreak at missing the holidays and her fear for the future, stating, “I’m losing everything.” Her attorney is committed to fighting for her return to the U.S.
