Sun Nov 30 01:10:00 UTC 2025: News Article: India Braces for Extreme Weather: Cyclone Dithwa Pounds South, Cold Wave Grips the North
New Delhi, November 30, 2025 – India is facing a stark weather divide as Cyclone Dithwa batters the southern coasts while a severe cold wave prepares to sweep across the northern states.
In the south, Cyclone Dithwa, already wreaking havoc in Sri Lanka, is forecast to bring destructive winds and heavy rainfall to Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Puducherry, and coastal Karnataka. Wind speeds are expected to reach up to 100 kmph, prompting authorities to issue an orange alert for coastal areas. Schools and colleges have been shut down in several districts, and residents are urged to remain vigilant. Fishermen have been advised against venturing into the sea.
Meanwhile, North India is bracing for a sharp drop in temperatures and dense fog. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a cold wave alert for Delhi, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, and Punjab. Dense fog is expected to severely reduce visibility, impacting transportation.
Uttar Pradesh is already experiencing a drop in temperatures, with further declines expected from December 1st. Minimum temperatures in several districts are predicted to fall below 7 degrees Celsius.
Delhi’s woes are compounded by worsening air quality, which remains in the “very poor” category and is expected to deteriorate further in the coming days.
Rajasthan is also experiencing a surge in cold weather.
In the Himalayan region, snowfall is expected in the higher reaches of Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand. Temperatures are already plunging below freezing in many areas.
