Karnataka CM and Deputy Discuss Power Transition Over Breakfast
Bengaluru, India – Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar held a breakfast meeting this morning at the Cauvery Residence, fueling speculation about a potential transition of power within the state’s Congress government.
Both leaders posted about the meeting on social media. Siddaramaiah kept it short, “I had breakfast with DK Shivakumar”. Shivakumar’s post was more detailed: “Met Chief Minister Siddaramaiah at Cauvery Residence this morning for a breakfast meeting. A productive discussion on Karnataka’s priorities and the road ahead.”
The meeting, accompanied by a photo op featuring the two leaders enjoying traditional Karnataka breakfast fare, is seen as a sign that a carefully orchestrated transition is in the works. Sources suggest the “Shivakumar-Siddaramaiah compromise formula” will see Shivakumar taking over as Chief Minister, potentially by March-April 2026.
Until then, Shivakumar will remain Deputy Chief Minister. The Congress party is keen to avoid any public discord in Karnataka, a key state where they hold power. Abruptly removing Siddaramaiah, a long-standing leader, is deemed undesirable.
Sources indicate that Shivakumar is likely to agree to the arrangement, as it includes guarantees of increased cabinet berths for his loyalists and continued leadership of the state Congress. He also lacks sufficient support for a hostile takeover.
Shivakumar is reportedly scheduled to travel to Delhi this evening to meet with central party leaders, while Siddaramaiah will remain in Bengaluru.
The success of the transition hinges on trust between the two leaders and acceptance from their respective support bases. Siddaramaiah’s influence within the “AHINDA” (a coalition of minority and backward castes) adds complexity to the situation, while Shivakumar represents the OBC Vokkaliga community, a key demographic for the Congress. The party must carefully navigate these dynamics to ensure a smooth transition and maintain stability.
