Hong Kong – November 27, 2025 – Firefighters continue to battle a devastating blaze that engulfed the Wang Fuk Court residential complex in Hong Kong’s Tai Po district. As of Thursday evening, the death toll has reached 65, marking one of the deadliest fires in the city’s modern history.
The fire, which began Wednesday afternoon, is believed to have ignited in bamboo scaffolding and construction netting before rapidly spreading across at least seven of the eight buildings in the densely populated complex. Thick smoke continues to billow from the scene, hampering rescue efforts.
Hong Kong leader John Lee confirmed that contact has been lost with 279 people. While rescues are ongoing in some towers, authorities have not released updated information on the number of people still trapped.
“When the fire started, I told her on the phone to escape. But once she left the flat, the corridor and stairs were all filled with smoke and it was all dark, so she had no choice but to go back to the flat,” said a resident identified as Lawrence Lee, anxiously awaiting news of his wife.
Around 900 residents have been evacuated to temporary shelters. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
