White House Moves to Label Muslim Brotherhood Branches as Terrorist Groups
Washington, D.C. – The Trump administration is initiating a process to designate branches of the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt, Lebanon, and Jordan as terrorist organizations. Citing alleged support for Hamas and actions against U.S. interests and allies, President Trump has directed the State Department and Treasury Department to compile a report within 30 days, paving the way for a formal designation within 45 days.
The move has been lauded by right-wing activists as a necessary step in combating terrorism, while critics warn it could enable authoritarianism and stifle free political expression in the Middle East. Concerns have also been raised about potential targeting of Muslim American activists and organizations based on unfounded accusations of ties to the Muslim Brotherhood.
The White House claims the Muslim Brotherhood’s “transnational network fuels terrorism and destabilization campaigns.” The designation would make it illegal to provide material support to the group, restrict entry into the U.S. for current and former members, and enable economic sanctions.
The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) expressed confidence in the solidity of American Muslim organizations but cautioned against the spread of conspiracy theories linking them to the Muslim Brotherhood.
Analysts suggest the order is primarily aimed at domestic audiences and right-wing donors, with limited impact on the Middle East. The timing coincides with U.S. efforts to broker a ceasefire in Gaza, further fueling speculation about the administration’s motivations.
