NAGAPATTINAM, INDIA – November 24, 2025 – Tamil Nadu Dr. J. Jayalalithaa Fisheries University (TNJFU) marked World Fisheries Day with a program in Vizhundamavadi village, Nagapattinam district, aimed at bolstering local aquaculture practices. The initiative, held on November 21st, focused on educating fish farmers about modern and sustainable techniques to improve yields and profitability.
TNJFU Vice-Chancellor N. Felix inaugurated the event, emphasizing the potential of freshwater aquaculture and outlining farmer-friendly technologies. The program featured the stocking of 1,000 Indian major carp fingerlings (catla, rohu, and mrigal) in local farm ponds.
A highlight was a harvest demonstration from a seven-month impact study project implemented by the University’s Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK). Gift tilapia (around 900g) and koduva (barramundi, around 750g) were harvested from local ponds and made available for sale, showcasing the potential of the improved aquaculture methods.
Over 50 local fish farmers participated in the event, with addresses also delivered by A. Gopalakannan, Director of Extension Education, TNJFU, and V. Senthilkumar, Project Coordinator, KVK. The program aimed to promote adoption of more modern and effective farming techniques, ultimately improving the livelihoods of local fish farmers.
