Patialkar, Kangra, Himachal Pradesh – Kangra district mourned the loss of Wing Commander Namansh Syal, 37, on Sunday as his mortal remains arrived in his native village of Patialkar. Syal was tragically killed on November 21st when the Tejas Light Combat Aircraft (LCA Mk-1) he was piloting crashed during the Dubai Air Show.
A wave of grief and pride washed over the village as hundreds gathered to pay their respects. Family, friends, colleagues, and military personnel joined in a somber procession as Syal’s body, transported in a flower-bedecked army truck, made its way through the village. His wife, Wing Commander Afshan Akhtar, offered a final salute amidst inconsolable sobs.
The remains were received with full military honors at Sulur Air Force Base in Tamil Nadu before being flown to Kangra airport.
Speaking amidst the mourning, Syal’s father, Jagan Nath Syal, a retired army veteran and educator, emphasized the magnitude of the loss. “I have lost my son, but the country has lost a promising pilot. It is not just my personal loss; it is the nation’s loss. Not many get the honour of serving the country,” he stated.
Wing Commander JK Sharma (retd), a colleague and friend since 2005, remembered Syal as an exceptional pilot. “From the training days he was good at what he did. He was actually the best. He passed with the sword of honour from NDA,” Sharma said, highlighting Syal’s distinguished service, including nine years flying the MiG-21 and serving as a qualified flying instructor.
Villagers remembered Syal as a simple, intelligent, and approachable individual. The nation mourns the loss of Wing Commander Namansh Syal, survived by his wife, six-year-old daughter, and parents. His sacrifice and dedication to the country will forever be remembered.
