USAF Pilot Condemns Dubai Airshow’s Continuation After Fatal Crash
Dubai, UAE – The Dubai Airshow 2025 has drawn criticism after proceeding with its flying displays following the tragic death of Indian Air Force (IAF) Wing Commander Namansh Syal. Syal was killed on Friday when his Tejas fighter jet crashed during a maneuver at Al Maktoum International Airport.
USAF Major Taylor “Fema” Hiester, Commander of the F-16 Viper Demonstration Team, expressed his shock and disappointment in an emotional Instagram post. Hiester announced his team had cancelled their final performance “out of respect to the pilot, his colleagues and family,” citing discomfort at the show’s decision to continue as normal.
“I walked through the show site maybe an hour or two later expecting it to be empty, down, or off. It wasn’t,” Hiester wrote, detailing how the show continued with an enthusiastic announcer, excited crowds, and a celebratory closing for sponsors and performers.
Hiester’s comments highlight the ethical considerations raised by the airshow’s decision to proceed despite the tragedy. The sentiment was echoed by a few other teams, who also cancelled their final performances.
Wing Commander Syal’s remains were returned to India on Sunday and cremated with full military honors.
The Dubai Airshow organizers have yet to release a statement.
