Texas Hill Country Reels from Flash Floods; More Rain on the Horizon

AUSTIN, TX – Texas Hill Country is battling significant flooding after torrential rain pummeled the region on Thursday, raising concerns for areas still recovering from deadly floods earlier this year. Over 9 inches of rain fell in some parts of western Hill Country, triggering a flash flood emergency for nearly 1,300 residents in Concho, McCulloch, and Menard counties.

Authorities issued precautionary evacuations at local RV parks and campsites as a result of the heavy rainfall. While the flash flood emergency was later downgraded to a regular flood warning, officials remain vigilant as another inch of rain is possible before the end of the night.

Flood watches extend along the I-35 corridor from Dallas-Fort Worth to Austin into early Friday morning. A brief respite from the rain is expected Friday and Saturday, but forecasters warn of another soaking storm arriving in Texas on Sunday. The Weather Prediction Center has issued a “Level 2 of 4” risk of flooding rainfall for northern and central Texas from Sunday into Monday.

Meteorologists attribute the unusually heavy rainfall for this time of year to ongoing unseasonable heat in the South, which is increasing the amount of moisture available for the storms to pull from the atmosphere.
