Mumbai, India – Veteran Bollywood actor Dharmendra, revered as the “He-Man” of Indian cinema, has died at the age of 89. He passed away after battling age-related illnesses.
The actor was admitted to Mumbai’s Breach Candy Hospital on November 10th after experiencing breathing difficulties. He was discharged two days later, with doctors prescribing at-home care.
Dharmendra resided in his Juhu bungalow with his son, actor Sunny Deol. His first wife, Prakash, and their daughters were also reportedly present.
His funeral took place at the Vile Parle crematorium in Mumbai and was attended by numerous Bollywood luminaries including Amitabh Bachchan, Salman Khan, Aamir Khan, and Akshay Kumar.
Dharmendra was one of Hindi cinema’s most respected and beloved stars. Spanning over seven decades, his career included over 300 films, including iconic hits like “Sholay,” “Chupke Chupke,” “Seeta Aur Geeta,” and “Dharam Veer.” His dialogues, particularly the famous “Basanti in kutto ke aage mat nachna” from “Sholay,” remain popular even today.
Filmmaker Karan Johar posted a tribute on Instagram, calling Dharmendra’s passing “the end of an era.” He described the actor as a “mega star,” a “HERO” in mainstream cinema, and a “true legend of Indian cinema.”
Dharmendra remained active in films even in his later years, with recent appearances in “Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani” and “Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya.” His final film, “Ikkis,” starring Amitabh Bachchan’s grandson Agastya Nanda, is slated for release on December 25th.
