Spurrier Endorses Kiffin, Drinkwitz for Vacant Florida Gators Head Coach Position
GAINESVILLE, FL (November 19, 2025) – The Florida Gators’ search for a new head football coach is gaining momentum following the mid-season dismissal of Billy Napier. As the program navigates this critical juncture, legendary coach Steve Spurrier, who led the Gators to their first national championship in 1996, has weighed in, suggesting Lane Kiffin of Ole Miss and Eli Drinkwitz of Missouri as potential “super hires.”
Spurrier, speaking on the “Another Dooley Noted” podcast, stated, “I know Lane Kiffin and I know Eli Drinkwitz. Obviously, either one of those guys would be super if it works out. But, it’s a long way from whoever we’re going to get as our coach right now.”
Both Kiffin and Drinkwitz have faced a barrage of questions regarding their interest in the Florida job. Kiffin addressed rumors during a Wednesday press conference, dismissing speculation that he would leave Ole Miss before their season finale against Mississippi State. He specifically refuted reports of his family members visiting Gainesville and Baton Rouge (home of LSU). Drinkwitz echoed a similar sentiment, emphasizing his commitment to Missouri and labeling the speculation as a “distraction.”
“All of this stuff is just a distraction,” Drinkwitz said. “I would like to remind everybody, including our fans, we absolutely love Mizzou. We love what we’re building. … My focus is going to remain on our team and our current situation and I am not going to get into all of that.”
The Gators, currently led by interim head coach Billy Gonzales, are preparing to face No. 20 Tennessee this Saturday. The outcome of that game, and the remaining schedule, will likely play a role in the university’s decision-making process. The coaching search is expected to intensify as the regular season concludes.
