Cuddalore, India – November 23, 2025 – A 25-year-old man, identified as Naveen, was shot in the knee by police near the Usuppur railway gate in Chidambaram, Cuddalore district, early Sunday morning. Police claim Naveen, a suspected ganja peddler, attempted to escape custody and assaulted a police constable after leading them to a location where he allegedly hid contraband and a machete.
According to authorities, the incident occurred after Naveen was apprehended in connection with the seizure of 5 kg of ganja from two individuals, Sriram and Chandru, travelling from Vellore to Chidambaram. These individuals reportedly identified Naveen as the intended recipient of the drugs.
Police had been searching for Naveen since April, when 20 kg of ganja was allegedly recovered from his possession. He was eventually located at a cremation ground in Sivapuri on Saturday, but managed to escape initial capture.
After being apprehended, Naveen led police to a location near Usuppur railway gate where he claimed to have hidden the contraband and machete. Police allege that upon arrival, Naveen retrieved the machete and attacked Constable Ayappan. Inspector Ambedkar, leading the police team, reportedly warned Naveen before firing on his right knee.
Both Naveen and Constable Ayappan are currently receiving treatment at the Chidambaram Government General Hospital.
Cuddalore Superintendent of Police S. Jeyakumar stated that Naveen has nine pending cases against him, including five related to ganja peddling, across police stations in Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, and Chennai.
