Coimbatore’s Semmozhi Poonga Set to Open December 1st After CM Inauguration

Coimbatore, November 22, 2025 – Coimbatore residents will soon have a new recreational space to enjoy, as the Semmozhi Poonga is scheduled to open to the public on December 1st. The announcement was made by Minister for Municipal Administration K.N. Nehru during an inspection of the 45-acre park, built on the former Central Prison grounds in Gandhipuram at a cost of ₹208.5 crore.

Chief Minister M.K. Stalin will inaugurate the park on November 25th, after which final ticketing and regulatory procedures will be completed. Nehru refuted claims that the project was behind schedule or that multiple contractors were rushing the work. He assured that all necessary permissions, including fire safety, electricity board clearance, and environmental approvals, would be secured before the inauguration.

Entry fees will be lower than initially proposed by the Corporation council. The inauguration ceremony will include interactions between the Chief Minister, school students, persons with disabilities, and 150 prominent Coimbatore residents. Former Minister V. Senthil Balaji and other senior officials were present during the inspection. While the park will be fully operational, the convention center will require more time to complete.
